Welcome to the web presence of the project
Animal Waste Utilisation Model in the Danube Delta

This site was produced with funding from the United Kingdom "Environment for Europe Fund" and supported by the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and British Council, as part of Small Environmental Project Scheme".

The project activities
include data collection and assessment of the Ukrainian Danube Region’s contribution to nutrient pollution of the Danube and the Lower Danube Lakes, development of a report on unorganised manure storage impact on the environment of the Ukrainian part of the Danube Region; installing a demonstration mini-plant for manure utilisation, humus and bio-gas production in Leski village; 2 seminars involving stakeholders interested in finding solution to the problem of nutrient pollution of the Danube and introduction of renewable energy sources; developing and publishing a brochure; developing a model of cooperation between stakeholders in the process of manure utilisation; developing a web site and dissemination of information.

Visual information on of main project tasks is presented in this flowchart.

Target group:
local community of Leski vallage, self-government bodies of Bolgrad, Reni, Izmail and Kiliya districts of Odessa Oblast, local NGOs, the State Department for Environment and Natural Resources in Odessa Oblast, the Directorate General for Agriculture of Odessa Regional State Administration, coordination bodies of the Lower Danube EuroRegion.

The overall long-term goal
of the project to develop a model for animal waste utilisation to reduce nutrient pollution of the Danube River and the Lower Danube lakes. Additionally, the project aims to raise a quality of life of people of the local community through interdicting renewable energy sources (biogas), and improving sanitary conditions. The objectives of this project are:

1.  Assessing the impact of unorganised manure storage on the nutrient pollution of the Ukrainian part of the Danube Region. This objective will be achieved through the work of an interdisciplinary expert team who will assess the Ukrainian Danube Region’s contribution to nutrient pollution of the Danube River and the lakes. This group will also analyse the mechanisms and effects of nutrient pollution, and provide groundwork for the development and introduction of measures to reduce it.

2.  Developing a model of cooperation between stakeholders in the process of manure utilisation. This objective will be achieved through work with local population, authorities, and businesspeople interested in animal-waste utilisation, and will promote sound animal-waste management practices (collection, storage and utilisation) in the local community of Leski village.

3.  Installing a demonstration mini-plant for manure utilisation, humus and bio-gas production in Leski village (Odessa Region). This installation will clearly and visibly demonstrate the benefits of current approaches to the animal-waste utilisation.

4.  Changing people’s behaviour through enhancing their awareness of the negative impact of unorganised manure storage.  This will be achieved by distributing a brochure to local people, publications in the media, and presentations to local authorities and NGOs at two seminars. All these will provide information on composting animal waste, outline results of the project, and re-enforce standards of organic fertiliser use.

5.  Transfrontier networking in the Lower Danube EuroRegion to reduce nutrient pollution in the Danube Delta. This will be achieved through strengthening and establishing connections, and exchanging experience and information between NGOs, local authorities and other stakeholders interested in new approaches to animal-waste utilisation. Participants will come from the regional members of the Lower Danube EuroRegion.
